Fun and Creative Ways to Make a Difference in Your Community

image1

Making a difference in your community isn’t as hard as you might think. Although many individuals believe they don’t have the time, money, or resources to make a difference, each year over 2 billion hours of service are given by everyday individuals.

You too can help make a difference by finding a cause that is connected to your passion, and using the things you already have in a creative and unique way.  Here are three ideas from the book How to Be an Everyday Philanthropist to help you get started:

Use Your Talents
We all possess talents or skills that are unique and valuable. Your talents have served you well over the years, now let them serve others.

  • Build a house with Habitat for Humanity (artisan or construction skills)
  • Write a grant proposal for a local non-profit (verbal and written communication skills, fundraising or grant writing skills)
  • Sew a quilt square for the AIDS Memorial Quilt (sewing or stitching skills)
  • Comfort an animal with the Cage Comforter Program (nurturing or caregiver skills)
  • Hunt with Hunters for the Hungry (hunting skills)
  • Volunteer with AmeriCorps VISTA (skills and knowledge from all backgrounds)

Use Your Body
You don’t need superhero powers to evoke change or make a difference in someone’s life. Using your body isn’t about how much physical labor you can perform, instead, it’s about using your physical ability and presence to bring about positive change.

  • Hands – Revitalize your neighborhood by picking up trash or starting a community garden. Visit GuerrillaGardening.org for inspiration and gardening tips
  • Eyes and Ears – Read to the blind with ReadThisToMe.org, or learn basic sign language online (for free) with StartAmericanSignLanguage.com
  • Legs – Walk, run, or bike for a cause
    • Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (Breast Cancer)
    • Relay for Life (All Cancers)
    • NAMI Walks (Mental Illness)
    • Walk MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
  • Fluids – Give blood or plasma with the American Red Cross
  • Presence – Volunteer with the Hospice Foundation of America to visit, read, or converse with hospice patients

Use Your Computer
You don’t need to leave your home or your computer to make a difference. The internet has reinvented the world of giving and activism, making it easier than ever to support the causes we care about.

  • Click to donate by visiting service-orientated websites and clicking on links to a variety of causes. Once you click, advertisers and sponsors will make a charitable donation on your behalf
    • HungryChildren.com – click to help provide food, medication, and other necessities to children in need
    • Care2.com – click to support abandoned animals
    • TheChildHealthSite.com – Click to help provide healthcare to children in need
    • TheHungerSite.com – Click to help fight hunger and poverty
    • TheLiteracySite.com – Click to help  give a book to a child in need
  • Play online games for a cause with GamesForChange.org
  • Sign up for an email account with PlanetSave.com, a free e-mail service that donates a portion of its profits to rain-forest preservation.
  • Become a virtual volunteer with the Virtual Volunteering Project and DoSomething.org

Although, this is a just a short list of creative ways to give back to your community, there are hundreds of fun opportunities available for anyone who wants to give back or make a difference.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”Martin Luther King Jr

Local Program Strengthens Antelope Valley by Addressing Pressing Needs

2265_001

In 2013, the City of Lancaster partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, in an effort to use volunteering as a strategy to address the City’s most pressing needs.  As a result, a program designed to help reduce poverty, build capacity, and connect communities in the Antelope Valley was created and implemented.

OneLINC (Lead • Inspire • Connect) is a community-wide volunteer program created to promote and manage volunteerism in the Antelope Valley. As OneLINC’s motto states, it is geared towards assisting local non-profits and community service organizations to recruit, train, and retain volunteers more efficiently, while seamlessly connecting individuals to opportunities throughout the Antelope Valley.

The program, located at City Hall in Lancaster, was created, implemented, and is currently being run by two AmeriCorps VISTAs with the help of City Staff mentorship and guidance. Alicia Austin and Roshelle Garcia are the two VISTAs tasked with strengthening and expanding the program this year.  AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a U.S. federal government national service program aimed to engage adults in community service projects as they commit one year of their lives to help win the fight against poverty. VISTAs create and expand programs that ultimately bring under-served individuals and communities out of poverty. Although OneLINC is positioned in Lancaster, the program is Antelope Valley wide, allowing all members of the community the opportunity to fully share in the benefits of the program.

To join the City in its effort to strengthen and connect the Antelope Valley, visit OneLINC online and register to volunteer your time and talents.

If you would like to become involved with OneLINC or volunteer in the Antelope Valley, visit www.OneLINC.org or call (661) 723-5840.

Volunteering: For Job Seekers

Blog_3_Final

With the fall job fair season in full effect, it is now more important than ever for job seekers to know the benefits associated with volunteering.

When job seekers hear the word volunteering, they are likely to think: work without pay. Although this is essentially true, because volunteers are not paid (money), the benefits associated with volunteering can actually be more valuable for your job search in the future.

Instead of avoiding any opportunity to volunteer, consider these four career benefits associated with volunteering:

  • Personal growth
    • Volunteering can help you grow as an individual by giving you the opportunity to practice essential skills in real life situations. Individuals are able to boost their confidence by using volunteer work to further develop their communication, social, and leadership skills.
  • Professional experience
    • Volunteering is a great option for individuals who are looking to gain professional experience and build their resume. Because volunteering isn’t just picking up trash, individuals have the opportunity to complete volunteer assignments in their field of interest. Individuals can choose to use volunteering to learn new job skills, or build on their current skills. Volunteering is also a good resume builder, as you can use your volunteer experience to fill any gaps in employment. Volunteers may also have preference over other candidates (at their site) for jobs opportunities that may arise.
  • Professional contacts and references
    • Volunteering can help you expand your professional network by connecting you to important community members and leaders. Individuals that you volunteer with can also serve as good professional references.  The cliché, it’s not what you know, but who you know, definitely holds true, and volunteering is a good way to end up at the right place, at the right time.
  • Career exploration and advancement
    • If you are unsure of what career path you would like to pursue, you can choose to volunteer in a variety of industries. This is a good way to gain a better understanding of different types of work, while exploring your strengths, weaknesses, and interests.
    • Volunteering can also help you get hired, get promoted, or improve your salary. Studies conducted by the Corporation for National and Community Service have found that volunteers are 27% more likely to find employment compared to non-volunteers. The study also found that 94% of individuals were able to get promoted or improve their salary after volunteering.

If you are currently seeking employment, consider volunteering as a way to boost your career by strengthening your skills and employability.  Volunteer to support a great cause, and grow as an individual and professional.
